Week 4: Avenues within Finance/Accounting

General Body Meeting: Have you ever heard of “Buy vs. Sell side” in finance and wonder what that actually means? At this PSIA meeting, we will go over the various career paths within finance and differentiate between the buy and sell side within the financial industry. We will talk about investment banking, sales & trading, asset management, and more.

Sector Breakout Meeting: Accounting is the language of business and the most fundamental subject to learn for Wall Street interviews. At this sector breakout meeting, your sector will go over the three main accounting statements, including the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows. We will discuss how the accounting statements work, the important line items within them, and how they all link together.

Week 5: Understanding News/Comps & Ratios

General Body Meeting: One of the most important habits to get into while studying finance is to keep up with the news. During this PSIA meeting, we will go over how to better understand and analyze news and discuss how it affects the financial markets. We will also go over various resources that you can use for news, in addition to how to sign up for them as a Penn State student.

Sector Breakout Meeting: An important method of being able to evaluate a company is to compare it against its peers within the market. In this sector breakout meeting, your sector will teach you how to compare a company to its competitors, including how to pick appropriate competitors and the methods of analyzing a company with its comparables.

Week 6: Market Outlook & Interview Prep/TVM, WACC, CAPM

General Body Meeting: As we get closer to Nittany Lion Fund interviews, it is time to start applying the knowledge that you have gained over the last few weeks of meetings to start preparing for a Wall Street job interview. Sector Breakout Meeting: During this sector breakout meeting, your sector will teach you the important formulas and terms that you need to know to prepare for finance interviews and the next sector breakout meeting on discounted cash flow. This includes the terminal value method (TVM), weighted average cost of capital (WACC), and the capital asset pricing model (CAPM).

Week 7: Analyzing an Investment/DCF

During this sector breakout meeting, your sector will run through a sample DCF model and explain the important components of a DCF valuation that impacts a company’s projected share price.

Week 8: Mock Stock Pitch/Market Outlook

General Body Meeting: One of the most important responsibilities Fund Managers have within the Nittany Lion Fund is pitching companies to either buy, sell, add, or shave within the portfolio. During this PSIA meeting, we will explain how we analyze companies for our own stock pitches by running through a recent pitch from one of our sector teams.

Sector Breakout Meeting: During this sector breakout meeting, your sector will review how to create an adequate market outlook for Wall Street interviews. In addition, you will have the opportunity to get your market outlook reviewed by the Fund Managers within your sector to receive feedback and go over basic market-related job interview questions.

Week 9: Stock Pitch Competition Prelims/Resume Review

General Body Meeting: Instead of a PSIA General Body Meeting this week, we will be conducting the preliminary rounds for the PSIA Stock Pitch Competition. Make sure that you sign up to compete for the chance to present your pitch in front of NLF Fund Managers!
